For nearly three years, a group of employees at the Shell/Motiva Refinery in Norco has been putting the pedal to the metal to help fund multiple sclerosis research. The 11-man St. Charles Parish Race Club just wrapped up the second of five racing events for the Louisiana R/C Challenge 2009. “Jerk, California” by Jonathan Friesen is about high school senior Sam Carrier, who lives with his mother and his stepfather. Sam struggles with his stepfather, who criticizes him about his Tourette's Syndrome, and struggles to see his true identity, Jack Keegan.
A new geotube levee is being built along the eastern 6 1/2 miles of beachfront at Grand Isle by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It will replace the levee that was almost entirely destroyed by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The Bethlehem Baptist Church in Hahnville hosted its spring Ladies Tea on Saturday, June 13 at the church. Murphy and Mittie Cortez celebrated 64 years of marriage on June 1, 2009. Nine LSU AgCenter educators recently won top honors for their home-buyer education program at the Louisiana Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual meeting. “What Are You Doing to Me!” by Ashley Robicheaux Cauley got the most votes last week and is the June 18 weekly winner in the St. Charles Herald-Guide’s Camera Shootout 2009 photo contest. Youth from around the parish joined NFL professional football player Ed Reed, who plays for the Baltimore Ravens, at Harry Hurst Middle School for his annual football camp. Several park visitors’ recent encounter with swarming bats at Luling’s Monsanto Park has residents weary of visiting the recreational area, but experts say that the occurrence is quite normal. It’s that time of year, the time when Little League teams across the region face off in season-ending tournaments, hopeful to stay on top and represent St. Charles Parish. If the number of strip malls being constructed around St. Charles Parish is any indication of good commerce, then it would be safe to say business is booming in the “Parish of Plenty.” The most popular summer-blooming tree in Louisiana is the crape myrtle with its lovely, long-lasting flowers. Crape myrtles start blooming between mid-May and early June and continue flowering for 80 to 100 days depending on the variety. Two Girl Scout cadettes from St. Charles Parish Troop 923 recently earned the “Girl Scout Silver Award,” the highest award a Girl Scout cadette can achieve.
